The News

Katie Zacharia, the newly appointed White House press secretary, has sparked controversy over her legal credentials after President Donald Trump referred to her as a lawyer during her appointment. When asked about her passage of the bar exam to practice law in the United States, she indicated that she had moved to China. Although she did not pass the bar exam in California, Zacharia stated in a statement that she worked in international law with the necessary qualifications.

The University of California at Berkeley confirmed that Zacharia obtained her doctorate in law in 2011. However, the Campaign for Accountability group filed a complaint with the California State Bar Association requesting an investigation into whether Zacharia had "misrepresented herself to the public as an attorney when she was not qualified to do so," which is a criminal offense under California law.

Zacharia, aged 42, had previously worked as a political strategist before her appointment to the White House. According to LinkedIn data, she worked as an assistant in the law office of Zong Long in Beijing from 2011 to 2013. In China, foreigners are not permitted to obtain a legal license to practice law, but they can work in law offices in other roles.

In an interview with conservative radio show "The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show" in February of last year, Zacharia stated that she worked as an external advisor for the World Bank and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development during her time in China. Although the White House has not confirmed these details, the World Bank indicated that external law firms can hire attorneys for specific projects.

White House communications director Steven Choi stated that Zacharia is "a remarkable and intelligent person to help the American people understand matters." Despite the controversy surrounding her legal credentials, Zacharia remains in her position as White House press secretary.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, the White House faces significant challenges in defending Zacharia, as the issue pertains to public trust in government. In a broader context, this issue raises questions about transparency and integrity in government positions. The White House must provide more details about the reasons for Zacharia's appointment as White House press secretary. Simultaneously, the controversy could impact the public's perception of the White House and its policies.
