The News

A Russian Yandex data center was damaged by a Ukrainian drone attack, forcing the company to halt operations at the center located in the city of Vladimir east of Moscow. Yandex reported that no injuries occurred during the attack, but some of its services became unavailable to users. This is the third attack on Yandex sites this week, following previous strikes in Sosnovy Bor and Kaluga, which caused issues with services such as the smart chatbot and smart home devices.

According to Yandex's Telegram statement, operations have been fully suspended at the damaged center in Vladimir, but the company is working to restore connectivity. Yandex noted that it cannot predict precisely when its services will be fully operational again. The company stated that its data centers are crucial for the efficient operation of its services.

Ukraine claims it targets sites that generate income for Russia's war machine, and that the attacks could force Russia to divert resources to repair damage at Yandex. Earlier in the week, former US President Donald Trump said Ukraine should stop striking Russian oil refineries, but this view has drawn criticism from Europe and a diplomatic response from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Meanwhile, Russian attacks on Ukraine continue, with Ukraine's emergency service reporting six injuries from Russian strikes on four areas in the southeastern Donbas region. On Saturday, Russian attacks killed four children and 16 adults in the Zaporizhzhia region. Russia has previously targeted Ukrainian data centers, leading to internet outages and prompting some companies to move their servers abroad.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, the repeated attacks on Russia's technological infrastructure indicate that Ukraine is targeting critical economic and technological vulnerabilities. Yandex, as a leading technology company in Russia, plays a significant role in the daily lives of Russian citizens.

In a broader context, Russia and Ukraine continue to launch attacks on each other's civilian and economic infrastructure, adding complexity to the conflict and increasing tensions between the two countries. This escalation also reflects the challenges major technology companies face in managing their operations in conflict zones.

It is also noteworthy that attacks on technological infrastructure could have long-term economic and social repercussions, including disruptions to internet and communication services.
