The Golden Ball Award (Ballon d'Or) in London confirmed its support for French sports journalist Christophe Gleize, who is serving a seven-year prison sentence in Algeria. During the award ceremony, held in London for the first time in its history, host Keith Scott and former player Thierry Henry highlighted Gleize's case, displaying a large screen image of him with the hashtag "#FreeGleize". Gleize, aged 37, was arrested in May 2024 while covering a local football team in the Algerian region of Kabylie.

In May 2024, Gleize traveled to Algeria to write a report about JSK, one of the country's prominent clubs. His arrest followed meetings with club officials linked to the Movement for Self-Determination in Kabylie (MAK), which the Algerian authorities consider a terrorist organization. In court, Gleize acknowledged some errors in his journalistic coverage, stating that he should have obtained a journalist visa instead of a tourist visa.

Reporters Without Borders noted that the interactions leading to Gleize's arrest occurred in a journalistic context, and some contacts took place before MAK was classified as a terrorist entity. During an appeal hearing in December, Gleize told the court, "I ask for your mercy so that I can join my family." However, the prosecution argued that Gleize did not travel to Algeria for journalistic work but to carry out subversive activities.

Gleize's case comes amid broader concerns about the persecution of writers and intellectuals in Algeria. For example, Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal was sentenced to five years in prison for insulting the country's security before being pardoned by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in 2025. Additionally, Gleize's arrest occurred during a period of diplomatic tensions between France and Algeria, marked by the withdrawal of ambassadors and the expulsion of diplomats.

In May 2024, French Justice Minister Éric Dupond-Moretti visited Algeria and urged the authorities to allow Gleize to return to his family. Dupond-Moretti stated that he believed President Tebboune would be willing to accept the request. However, the Algerian authorities have not officially commented on the Golden Ball Award's decision.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, this event reflects the political and diplomatic tensions between France and Algeria. Algeria faces international criticism for its arrest of journalists and writers, raising concerns about press freedom in the country. Furthermore, Gleize's case comes in the context of ongoing tensions between the two countries over the Western Sahara issue, where Algeria supports the Polisario Front while France recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over the region. In a broader context, Gleize's case raises concerns about human rights and press freedom in Algeria, with human rights organizations calling for his release.
