The News

The U.S. Attorney General's Office announced a new development in the case of former FBI Director James Comey, charging him with disclosing classified information to the New York Times in October 2016 while he was serving as the FBI director. According to court documents, the charges relate to the leaking of classified information. Comey, in a video posted on Substack, declared his innocence of the charges and described the move as a "horrific exploitation of the Department of Justice." He also stated that he is not afraid of the charges and trusts the independence of the federal judiciary.

James Comey's lawyer, Patrick Fitzhenry, pointed out that two teams of federal prosecutors investigated the incident in 2016 and did not decide to file any charges at that time. Fitzhenry also noted that this case may exceed the legal statute of limitations, increasing the likelihood of the charges against Comey being dismissed.

This move comes in the context of attempts by past and current Trump administrations to bring charges against Comey, who refused to accept the accusations. Comey has also stated that he is not afraid of the charges and trusts the independence of the U.S. federal judiciary. Since his firing by President Donald Trump in 2017, Comey has remained at the center of political debate. In September 2025, he was charged with lying to Congress and obstructing justice, but the case was dropped in November of the same year. In April 2026, another charge was brought against him due to an Instagram post containing a picture of seashells forming the number "86 47," which prosecutors considered a threat to the life of Trump.

On the same day new charges were filed against Comey, a federal judge ruled that the Trump administration illegally fired his daughter, Maura Comey, who was serving as a federal prosecutor in New York, and ordered her reinstatement with back pay.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, this move by the U.S. Attorney General's Office reflects a continued effort to bring down Comey, one of the most prominent critics of President Trump. In a broader context, the case highlights ongoing tensions between the executive and judicial branches of power in the United States. It also sheds light on the challenges faced by former officials in confronting criminal charges. At the same time, the case underscores the political impact of news and reporting in the United States.
