French police arrested a 14-year-old student after he shot a principal and a teacher at a secondary school in Aubagne, a city in southern France, on Monday. According to local officials, the student entered the school with a rifle concealed inside a guitar case and fired shots before being apprehended by a staff member. No students were injured, but the 53-year-old principal was wounded in the leg and back, and the 37-year-old teacher was hit in the thigh. The prosecutor in Marseille opened an investigation into attempted murder.
Jean-Pierre Skylari, the mayor of Aubagne, stated that the student fired shots in the hallways before ascending to the second floor where he fired two more shots, one of which missed and the other hit the blackboard. While the student and other teachers remained unharmed, they were deeply shocked. Skylari confirmed that all students were immediately confined and psychological support units were set up on site.
French media reported that the student’s father was also detained after weapons were found in the family home. Skylari noted that the student was "like any other student" and his father had requested a meeting with the school’s educational counselor. Police sources indicated that the incident was not linked to ongoing protests over school conditions.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced that the school would be closed to students on Tuesday. President Emmanuel Macron expressed full solidarity with teachers, students, and parents. National Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer wrote on social media: "This unacceptable act highlights the rise in violence in our society, and we must all stand against it."
