The News:

The American Islamic Council (CAIR) has called on the White House and the US Congress to exert pressure on the Israeli government to release Abd Al-Kareem Ismail Ahmed Safi, an American citizen who has been held in an Israeli prison since June 2026 without any charges being filed. Nihad Awad, the executive director of CAIR, stated in a press release: "It is unacceptable for the White House and Congress to allow the Israeli government to continue to kidnap Americans and hide them in prisons notorious for torture without any criminal charges or legal proceedings." Awad also urged Congress to use its oversight powers to demand that the US State Department secure the immediate and safe release of Safi.

CAIR and one of its branches in Texas noted that Safi, an American citizen of Texas origin, has been detained in an Israeli prison known for torture for nearly four months without any charges being filed. According to a statement from the group "American Muslims for Palestine," Israeli forces raided Safi's family home in Jalazun, north of Ramallah in the West Bank, in the middle of the night in June. According to a report from the independent American news agency Zeteo, Israeli authorities issued an administrative detention order against Safi a few days later based on information hidden from his lawyers and family.

When asked about the case, a spokesperson for the US State Department said the department was aware of the news about the American detainee in the West Bank. The spokesperson added that "the Trump administration takes its commitment to assist Americans abroad very seriously, and we are monitoring the situation." However, the spokesperson refused to comment further, citing "privacy considerations and others."

Analysis & Context:

Analytically, this incident reflects ongoing tensions between the United States and Israel regarding human rights and the legal treatment of Americans detained in Israel. Safi's case raises concerns about legal procedures and fundamental rights of Americans detained abroad, particularly in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In a broader context, the case highlights the role of the United States as a guarantor of legal and political rights for Americans abroad, especially in cases of kidnapping and detention by foreign governments. It also highlights the challenges faced by American human rights organizations in defending the rights of Americans held in prisons notorious for torture.

Safi's case also underscores the ongoing tensions between the United States and Israel regarding human rights and the legal treatment of Americans detained in Israel, pointing to the need for improved bilateral relations and negotiations on legal and human rights issues.
