The News

The moderate Unity coalition, led by Prime Minister Andrejs Kesteris, emerged victorious in Latvia's parliamentary elections, securing its continued hold on power. The Unity coalition garnered 42 seats out of 100, marking its largest win since Latvia's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Kesteris expressed his refusal to cooperate with pro-Russian parties, particularly the First Latvia party, which received 11.3% of the vote.

Political scientist Roberts Kīlis noted that the Unity coalition could form a parliamentary majority with either the Nationalist Party or the Progressive Party. Despite attempts by some populist parties to capitalize on public discontent, none proposed a shift away from the alliance with the European Union and NATO.

The results indicated that national security and economic issues were of paramount importance to Latvian voters. In response, Germany sent four Eurofighter jets to Latvian airspace to protect the country during the elections. Despite the economic and social challenges facing Latvia, the country remains committed to spending at least 5% of its GDP on defense, underscoring the importance of its NATO alliance.

Kesteris emphasized that he would not cooperate with pro-Russian parties, stating, "I will not work with any party seeking to change our political course." Kīlis added, "Collaboration with other parties is possible, but it would require broad political consensus."

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, the election results suggest that a majority of voters in Latvia prefer to continue the policy of aligning with the European Union and NATO. This alliance reflects security concerns in the country, particularly amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In a broader context, the elections also highlight the economic challenges facing Latvia, including rising living costs, migration, and an aging population.

Simultaneously, the growing role of NATO in safeguarding Latvian airspace is evident, as European Eurofighter jets were dispatched to the country to protect the airspace during the elections. This underscores the ongoing tensions between Latvia and Russia and also reflects Latvia's commitment to defending its territory in the face of increasing security threats.
