Federal prosecutors announced that Abdulrahman Alafeef, a Saudi engineer employed by Autobai, has been charged with secretly planting a recording device in Autobai's San Francisco office in California. According to the prosecutors, the objective of planting the device was to capture sensitive information about the company's artificial intelligence products.
Autobai confirmed that it discovered the hidden device and reported it to the FBI. The company stated that it used its own AI models to trace the source of the device and determine that it was planted by an employee. Autobai also noted that there was no evidence found of a data breach or data theft.
The FBI explained that Alafeef used productivity tools and chatbots to research sensitive locations within Autobai and how to covertly place recording devices. The agency also mentioned that Alafeef returned to the location of the device the following day to check it. Another similar recording device was found in a bag left in another part of the building.
According to prosecutors, the hidden device was wrapped in toilet paper and inserted into a USB port on the back of a TV in the company's executive conference room. The FBI director, Kash Patel, stated that Alafeef "secretly installed a recording device in the executive conference room to illegally record confidential discussions."
