The Hajar Mountains: the backbone of northern Oman

The Hajar mountain range curves across northern Oman and includes the highest peaks in eastern Arabia. Among its best-known destinations are Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams in Ad Dakhiliyah Governorate, which attract visitors looking for mild weather, scenery and hiking.

Jebel Akhdar

What makes it special?

Jebel Akhdar is known for its high plateau, mild in summer and cold in winter, and for terraced farms built on the mountainsides, where pomegranates, walnuts, apricots and other fruit are grown.

The rose season

Jebel Akhdar is famous for its mountain roses, picked in spring and distilled into rose water using traditional methods. This is one of the most beautiful times to visit, when the villages fill with the scent of roses.

Villages worth visiting

Small villages dot the plateau, such as Wadi Bani Habib with its old ruins, and terraced villages whose paths you can wander.

Getting there

The road up Jebel Akhdar is very steep, so a four-wheel-drive vehicle is usually required, and there is a checkpoint at the start of the road.

Jebel Shams

Oman's highest peak

Jebel Shams includes the Sultanate's highest peak and is famous for its view over Wadi Ghul, sometimes called the "Grand Canyon of Arabia" for its deep gorge and towering rock walls.

The balcony walk

One of Oman's best-known hikes runs along the edge of the gorge to an abandoned village perched on the cliff. It offers stunning views but requires fitness and care.

Best time to visit

  • Winter: good for hiking and camping, but nights on the peaks can be very cold, sometimes near freezing.
  • Summer: a good escape from city heat, as temperatures at altitude stay much lower than on the coast.
  • Spring: the rose season on Jebel Akhdar.

Safety tips

  • Use a four-wheel drive on mountain roads and drive slowly, especially on sharp bends.
  • Stay alert near gorge edges, and avoid long trails alone.
  • Carry enough water and warm clothes, as the weather can change quickly.
  • Check forecasts and avoid wadis when rain is possible, as flash floods can be sudden and dangerous.

Conclusion

Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams show a different side of Oman: cool air, hanging villages, terraced farms and deep canyons. With good preparation, a trip there is one of the best travel experiences in the region.
