The News

Media outlets linked to the Houthi movement in Yemen report that air strikes launched by Saudi Arabia have killed at least 33 people, including women and children, in the town of Shari'a, east of the capital Sanaa. No comment has yet been issued by the Saudi-led coalition supporting the internationally recognized government in Yemen. Al-Masirah TV channel, affiliated with the Houthis, stated that live video footage showed rescue teams searching for bodies among the rubble of several buildings in the area.

Saba News Agency, run by the movement itself, said the attack took place on Saturday and injured 39 people in addition to the fatalities. The channel also displayed images of small children's bodies retrieved from under debris, as well as scenes of wounded individuals being transported on stretchers toward hospitals. This incident comes amid a resumption of major fighting between the Houthis and Saudi coalition forces after months of a ceasefire that had been in place for years.

The region witnessed a deterioration of the truce when Saudi Arabia struck Sanaa International Airport to prevent an Iranian plane from landing; in response, the Houthis targeted Abha Airport in Saudi Arabia as well as ships using the Red Sea as an alternative route for oil exports. This escalation led to a renewed outbreak of widespread clashes that, according to the United Nations, have killed more than 1,600 people and displaced over 300,000 others since fighting resumed.

Earlier on Friday, the Saudi coalition reported intercepting a missile heading toward Riyadh hours before the strike on Shari'a. While the Houthis blamed Saudi Arabia for launching the airstrike, government forces claimed the Houthis fired a missile at the site. Houthi leader Mahdi al-Mashat stated that the movement would take revenge for recent attacks in Yemen.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, this new attack represents a dangerous turning point in the trajectory of the Yemen conflict, which had relatively quieted down over several years before reigniting with rising regional tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia. UN reports indicate that more than 1,600 people have been killed and over 300,000 civilians displaced since intense hostilities resumed between the two sides.

In the broader context, Yemen is witnessing an asymmetric war in which Saudi-led coalition forces target Houthi positions, while the Houthi movement retaliates by launching missiles at sites within Saudi territory, such as airports and oil facilities. This exchange of fire has severely deteriorated the humanitarian situation amid mutual accusations from both sides of committing grave violations against civilians.

The decision by the Saudi coalition to launch air strikes on residential areas in Shari'a appears to be a dangerous escalation that could further exacerbate the humanitarian crisis and undermine regional stability, especially as the Houthis continue to threaten the Kingdom's security through repeated missile attacks.
