Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, announced that he summoned the Russian ambassador in Bulgaria, Elizabeta Metkova, after two drone attacks on cargo ships off the Bulgarian coast in the Black Sea, resulting in the sinking of one of them. According to a statement from the Bulgarian Defense Ministry, six crew members from the Guinea-Bissau ship HS Dignity were rescued after sending out a distress signal, while ten others remain missing. Meanwhile, all fifteen crew members of the Ukrainian ship Chelsea-3 were rescued after it was targeted.

At a press conference, Radev stated that preliminary conclusions point to the attacks benefiting Russia, although there is no confirmed evidence implicating any party. Radev said, "Logic points to the results benefiting the Russian Federation." In turn, the Russian ambassador noted that she had not received any information from the Russian Defense Ministry regarding the recent attacks, suggesting a possibility of a third-party attack.

In this context, Radev held an urgent meeting with NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, who confirmed that the alliance will continue to strengthen its position on the eastern front. According to Stoltenberg, the alliance will continue to monitor the security environment and adjust its defensive and deterrent posture as needed. The Bulgarian Defense Minister also highlighted that the attacks point to an escalation of tensions in the Black Sea, threatening the potential outbreak of conflict in Bulgarian territorial waters.

For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed deep concern over the recent attacks, emphasizing that Russia is targeting commercial ships in the Black Sea to obstruct the global food supply. According to the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, the recent attacks show "a deliberate disregard by Moscow for civilian lives and the safety of the Black Sea." In contrast, the Kremlin rejected Kiev's accusations, asserting that the attacks target ships transporting weapons and dual-use goods to Ukrainian ports.

In conclusion, NATO and Turkey continue to call for a naval ceasefire in the Black Sea, but Russia strongly rejects these calls, arguing that Ukrainian attacks on Russian commercial ships are the primary cause of the tension.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, the repeated attacks on commercial ships in the Black Sea point to an escalation of tensions in the region. Russia claims it is targeting ships carrying weapons and dual-use goods to Ukrainian ports, while Kiev and its European allies assert that civilian grain and cargo ships are the targets. This situation raises significant concerns about the security of the Black Sea and the safety of maritime navigation.

In a broader context, the Russian navy is playing an increasing role in the Ukrainian war, stepping up attacks on ships in the Black Sea, particularly in its western part. This escalation raises fears of a larger conflict in the area, especially since Bulgaria is a member of NATO. NATO continues to bolster its military presence in the region to counter rising Russian threats.

It is also noteworthy that the Black Sea represents a crucial grain supply route for the world, making attacks on commercial ships a major concern for the global community. Many see Russia exploiting this situation to use hunger as a lever of pressure on the world, increasing the need for international efforts to ensure the security of the Black Sea and the safety of maritime navigation.
