The News

Hundreds of large French stores were hit by a cyber attack that caused their fridges and freezers to heat up, resulting in damage to fresh and frozen foods worth millions of euros. According to BBC News, the hackers exploited the software that controls the temperature of refrigeration units, causing temperatures to rise to 50 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit) in some units during the night. The CEO of Coopérative U described the attack as "serious and unprecedented." The attack also targeted major retail chains such as Carrefour, Monoprix, and E.Leclerc, focusing on the software provided by Danish company Danfoss.

According to AFP, over 100 Coopérative U stores and 300 Intermarché and Netto stores were affected. Carrefour reported that 80 of their 6,000 stores were compromised, while Monoprix noted that 5% of their 400 stores were affected. In some cases, overheating of fridges led to small fires.

Danfoss stated that the compromised cooling units were older models that could not be updated with security patches to prevent such attacks. The French public prosecutor has opened a special investigation into the attack, describing it as a "wide-ranging cyber attack on refrigeration units at major French retail food chains."

Analysis & Context

Analytically, this attack highlights security vulnerabilities in remote control systems for refrigeration units in large retail stores. Cyber attacks on critical infrastructure like these units threaten food safety and disrupt supply chains.

In a broader context, cyber attacks on food infrastructure are becoming a growing source of concern, potentially leading to supply shortages and economic and health impacts. This attack underscores the need for improved cybersecurity in these vital sectors.

It is worth noting that cyber attacks on food infrastructure could become tools for economic and political warfare, increasing the importance of international cooperation to counter such threats.
