The News
Muscat, a city located on the Gulf of Oman and known for its ancient trading port, has a rich history. It was first controlled by the Portuguese, who were trying to dominate the trade routes in the Indian Ocean. The Portuguese built or expanded fortifications overlooking the harbor, including the well-known Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts. In the mid-seventeenth century, the Omanis expelled the Portuguese from Muscat under the Ya'aruba dynasty, around 1650 during the reign of Imam Sultan bin Saif. Following this, the Omanis established a powerful navy that extended its influence along the coasts of East Africa. Muscat then became a key political and commercial center.
