What is the khareef?
In Dhofar Governorate in southern Oman, "khareef" is the name of the monsoon season, which runs roughly from late June to September. While most of the Arabian Peninsula endures intense summer heat, Dhofar's mountains and plains turn green, wrapped in mist and light drizzle, and temperatures drop to mild levels.
Why does it happen?
The cause is the south-west monsoon wind from the Indian Ocean. It carries moist air, and when this air hits Dhofar's mountains it rises and cools, condensing into constant mist and drizzle. The phenomenon is rare in the Arabian Peninsula, which is why the khareef attracts visitors from Oman, the Gulf and beyond.
Places worth visiting
Wadi Darbat
One of the khareef's best-known sights, with waterfalls and small lakes amid wide green spaces, and cattle and camels grazing.
Ain Razat and Ain Garziz
Springs surrounded by trees and gardens, popular with families.
Al Mughsail beach
Known for its rocky blowholes, where seawater shoots upward when the waves are high, and for mountain views over the sea.
Land of Frankincense archaeological sites
Dhofar has sites linked to the history of the frankincense trade, such as Al Baleed Archaeological Park in Salalah and the ancient city of Sumhuram, part of the Land of Frankincense site on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
The khareef festival
During the season, Salalah hosts entertainment, cultural and shopping events, including performances, traditional markets and children's activities, with dates and programmes announced each year.
Practical tips
- Book early: demand for hotels, apartments and cars rises sharply at the peak of the season.
- Drive carefully: thick fog reduces visibility on mountain roads, especially early in the morning and in the evening.
- Pack light rain-resistant clothes: the drizzle is frequent.
- Respect the environment: do not leave litter in valleys and pastures, and watch out for loose animals on the roads.
- Follow safety guidance: especially at waterfalls, water bodies and beaches; the sea during the monsoon can be rough and dangerous for swimming.
Conclusion
The khareef is a unique experience in the region: a summer without heat, and green nature in a desert setting. With good planning and attention to safety, a trip to Dhofar can be one of the best family holidays.
