The News

China's CCTV media apparatus announced it would not broadcast the Real Madrid match held on Sunday despite the apology offered by star Kylian Mbappé regarding his comments about Chinese leader Mao Zedong, following widespread indignation in China.

The China Media Group stated it would suspend broadcasting of La Liga matches until three apologies are issued by the concerned parties, describing this as an absolute condition for recovering from this incident that led several Chinese brands to withdraw sponsorship from the French player.

A team spokesperson clarified that Mbappé apologized on Tuesday, stating his comments were ill-considered and that he now realized his words harmed many in China and Chinese communities worldwide, while the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed it took the apology seriously.

Mao Zedong is remembered as the founder of the Communist Party of China and the People's Republic of China, who died in 1976 after a rule that included bloody events such as the Cultural Revolution, which caused a famine killing millions of people, making any mention of him extremely sensitive.

This is not the first time Beijing has stopped broadcasting sports matches for political reasons; in 2019, the NBA network suspended matches for a year after the general manager of the Houston Rockets expressed support for Hong Kong protesters before later apologizing.

Real Madrid concluded its Sunday match with a 3-0 victory over Santander thanks to goals from Mbappé, Bellingham, and Jude Bellingham, although the official broadcast of the matches in China remains suspended without a set return date.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, this incident reveals China's high political sensitivity toward any mention of a former leader like Mao Zedong, especially since the Communist Party of China deifies his image despite the tragic events witnessed in the country under his leadership, such as the Cultural Revolution and the Great Famine. This incident is part of a broader pattern where China imposes strict censorship on content that could be interpreted as challenging state authority or insulting historical symbols, affecting even international sports coverage.

In the broader context, this is not the first time Beijing has taken strict measures against sports broadcasting for political reasons; in October 2019, China suspended broadcasting of matches in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for a full year after Darrell Murray, general manager of the Houston Rockets, posted a tweet supporting Hong Kong protesters. Murray later withdrew his stance and apologized for his comments following harsh criticism from fans and Chinese business partners, reflecting how public opinion in China influences global commercial and sporting decisions.

This interaction demonstrates how sports have become a venue for diplomatic and political competition among major powers, where a simple gesture like a player's comment or a satirical image can lead to significant economic and political consequences on a global scale. It also highlights how global brands find themselves in difficult positions trying to balance their belonging to global sports with the necessity of respecting local political sensitivities in major markets such as China.
