The News

U.S. President Donald Trump highlighted that Elon Musk had reactivated the military internet service for Ukraine through the Starlink system, after access had been restricted, impacting the Ukrainian military's ability to use drones. According to Trump, the restrictions were lifted after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed dissatisfaction with the system's speed not being restored to the required level.

Zelensky stated in a press conference: "The speed has not been restored to 400 km/h yet," and added that he is awaiting a response from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding this issue. According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, it was claimed that Trump contacted Musk and requested him to lift the restrictions imposed on Starlink usage by Ukraine.

Ukraine uses SpaceX-owned Starlink system in a range of military communication operations and early warning systems during Russian missile attacks. The restrictions affected Ukraine's capability to use drones and intercept Russian attacks.

The restrictions on the Starlink system came at a time when Trump was pressuring Zelensky to halt Ukraine's attacks on Russian oil refineries, which he viewed as contributing to the rise in oil prices. In this context of pressure, Trump agreed to sanctions exemptions and reached an agreement to import Russian diesel to the U.S. market, a move criticized by Ukraine's European allies.

Earlier, Musk had clarified that the U.S. government controls access to Starshield, the military version of Starlink used by the Ukrainian army. However, the White House repeatedly stated that it had not requested any restrictions on access to this service.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, this decision reflects the ongoing tension between the United States and Ukraine regarding the use of advanced technology in the conflict. Ukraine relies on the Starlink network to support its military operations and needs this technology to enhance its defensive capabilities. In a broader context, this development highlights the growing influence of space technology in modern military conflicts. At the same time, this decision also underscores the political influence of President Trump in U.S.-Ukraine relations, where it appears Trump reactivated the network at Zelensky's request.
