The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has decided to choose Moscow to host the World Championships in 2030, making it the first major event in an Olympic sport to be organized in Russia since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The IWF announced last July the lifting of the temporary ban on Russian participation in its sporting events.
Secretary General of the IWF, Jose Perurena, stated that all the bids received by the IWF were excellent, affirming that championships in different countries will be highly successful. Alexander Vinokurov, the Russian president of the IWF, posted on Telegram: "Thank you to the IWF for its trust in Russia."
Russia has not hosted a World Championships in weightlifting since 1983, yet the Russian Weightlifting Federation believes that the country has the experience and capabilities necessary to host major sporting events. Vinokurov also pointed out that Moscow has hosted numerous major international sporting events and possesses modern infrastructure.
In a different context, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced in July the lifting of the temporary ban on the Russian Olympic Committee, opening the door for Russian athletes to participate in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. However, a final decision has not yet been made on displaying the Russian flag, national anthem, and coat of arms at the Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has announced that it will file a lawsuit with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) requesting the cancellation of the IOC's decision to lift the ban on the Russian Olympic Committee. Despite this, the IOC has allowed Russian athletes to participate in the Winter Olympics in Milan this year as neutrals.
