Residents of the Russian-occupied city of Oleshka have arrived in Belarus following their evacuation during a local ceasefire. According to authorities, they are scheduled to return later on Saturday to Ukraine. The residents were evacuated on Friday thanks to a ceasefire brokered by First Lady Melania Trump.
Transport aircraft carrying Oleshky residents landed in Gomel early Saturday, according to Belarusian media and a senior Ukrainian official. David Arakamyia, a prominent Ukrainian official, stated that the fourth and last plane landed in Gomel, and all Ukrainian citizens evacuated from Oleshka will be on Ukrainian soil within hours alongside the Ukrainian delegation.
The state-owned Belta news agency of Belarus reported that a bus convoy carrying Oleshky residents departed from Gomel Airport and headed toward the Ukrainian border. The humanitarian ceasefire came into effect in the Kherson frontline area on Tuesday, providing days of calm for the first time since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The ceasefire allowed for the removal of mines from the road outside Oleshky and will remain in force until Sunday, November 1st. Residents had a four-hour window to leave before a convoy comprising 25 buses, each seating 750 people, departed the city on Friday afternoon, along with ambulances to assist those with special needs.
On Friday, Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's Commissioner for Human Rights, stated that those who decided to remain in the city despite widespread destruction and shortages of gas, electricity, and water would primarily receive necessary humanitarian aid. Lubinets traveled with his Russian counterpart, Yana Lanratova, to Oleshky on Friday from Armanysk in the occupied Crimean Peninsula, making Lubinets the first Ukrainian official to visit parts of Ukraine occupied by Russia since the start of the war.
Russia stated on Thursday that it had prepared "tons" of aid for residents who do not wish to leave, including food, medicine, hygiene products, and fuel for generators.

Analysis & Context
From an analytical perspective, the arrival of displaced persons in Belarus represents a critical humanitarian step that allows those fleeing the war to return to their homeland or move to temporarily safe areas. This operation demonstrates complex international cooperation, combining efforts by the United States through First Lady Melania Trump with Belarus's logistical support in receiving aircraft and buses.
In the broader context, the importance of the humanitarian ceasefire in Kherson emerges as an exceptional measure that permits mine removal and saving lives amidst a continuous war environment spanning two and a half years. The visit by Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's Human Rights Commissioner, to occupied areas alongside his Russian counterpart Yana Lanratova contributed to implementing this ceasefire, despite criticisms directed at him from some sectors in Ukraine due to his dealings with the representative of the occupying Russian authority.
It is noted that the decision of some residents to remain in Oleshka despite destruction and lack of basic services reflects the significant human difficulties faced by civilians in conflict zones. Ukrainian authorities have pledged to provide necessary humanitarian aid to anyone choosing to stay, while Russia declared its readiness to provide aid including food and medicine for residents who do not wish to leave.
Finally, this evacuation process remains an example of how diplomatic and humanitarian channels can be used to create temporary safe spaces in conflict areas, while maintaining the flexibility needed to receive large numbers of displaced persons in record time.
