The News

The European Union condemned an attack by Israeli settlers on a convoy carrying European diplomats in the occupied West Bank, calling for measures to halt acts of violence. The attacks occurred on Friday in the Palestinian village of Taybeh, east of Ramallah, where masked assailants attacked a delegation that included representatives from France, Belgium, Poland, and Catholic Church representatives. The attackers threatened members of the delegation and smashed the window of a Belgian diplomatic vehicle. Bernard Baudeux, the mayor of Onille-Aimeric, France, said he was punched and beaten despite wearing the official ribbon identifying him as a French official.

According to Reuters, the EU stated that statements made by Israeli officials against the attacks were insufficient and that it expects "full accountability" and measures to prevent violence against Palestinians and journalists. The EU also called on Israel to halt the expansion of settlements in occupied territories and to respect international law. In turn, French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault called on Israel to arrest those responsible for the attacks and protect civilians. In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said the attackers were "rioters" and that the police had opened an investigation into the incident.

In the same context, the United States condemned the attacks and urged Israel to take stringent measures against settlers. U.S. National Security Advisor Marco Rubio said that President Donald Trump does not want a new crisis in the West Bank. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Hammer described the attack on journalist Heidi Levine as a "vile act of terrorism" and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. On the same day, Israeli settlers uprooted 120 olive trees in the village of Kisan, southeast of Bethlehem, exacerbating the economic crisis for Palestinian farmers who rely on the olive harvest as a primary source of income.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, this attack reflects the increasing settler violence against Palestinians and journalists during the olive harvest season. This violence threatens to disrupt the Palestinian economy and escalate political tensions in the region. The attack also increases diplomatic pressure on Israel to address these attacks and protect Palestinian civilians and foreign diplomats.

In the broader context, settler attacks form part of a wider dispute over control of Palestinian territories. Israel claims the right of settlers to settle in the West Bank, while Palestinians view these settlements as part of a colonial occupation that threatens their rights to land and sovereignty. This reflects the deep tensions between Israel and Palestinians over control of the land and political rights.
