The News
According to France 24, Nepal is facing a major challenge in identifying the remains of victims found after the floods that struck the country on August 26. Some of the victims are in an advanced state of decomposition. For health reasons, unidentified bodies are being buried. Before each burial, DNA samples are taken and an identification number is assigned to each set of remains. Relatives of those reported missing can visit DNA collection centers to provide a sample. Their genetic profile can then be compared with that of the bodies found, in the hope of identifying them. FRANCE 24’s correspondents visited one such center, set up within the police hospital in Kathmandu.
