The News
A shooting at Silver Ridge Elementary School in Oregon resulted in the deaths of three students and a teacher. The father of some of the students, Kaylub Giamanco, killed the attacker. In an interview with Oregon Public Radio, Giamanco, 36, expressed his regret for not being able to save more children who were screaming in fear. He stated that helping a teacher who was struggling with the attacker allowed him to intervene without losing his life.
The incident occurred on a school picture day when Giamanco was on his way to work and saw the attacker firing at a car and heading towards the school. He quickly took his weapon from the car and informed the police that he would intervene. Upon reaching the school, Giamanco entered the classroom where the attacker was struggling with a teacher. He shot the attacker and threw his weapon when a police officer appeared. Giamanco said he felt he was the "last line of defense" between the students and the attacker.
The police indicated that the attacker, Griffin Jon Junior, was a former student at the school. The family of Megan Lambert, the teacher who died in the attack, stated that she was working in her ideal job and always advocated for special-needs students. Roham Smith, the five-year-old victim's father, said his family is "broken and lost." Giamanco's mother expressed a desire to keep her son's privacy. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised Giamanco's courageous intervention while highlighting the emotional toll it took on him.
Giamanco continues to relive the incident in his dreams, seeing the faces of the victims and hearing their screams.
