An international effort spanning five years has successfully rescued and rehomed two brown bears, Bu and Tyapa, from Russia to Ireland, where they now reside in a safe sanctuary. According to BBC News, the project began in 2021 when Kieran McLoughlin, founder of Wild Ireland Sanctuary, discovered the plight of the bears in Russia. One was living in a small cage where it could not stand upright, while the other was dedicated to circus performances.
McLoughlin stated that the bears faced significant health issues upon rescue, including malnutrition and psychological stress. However, after being transferred to Wild Ireland Sanctuary in County Donegal, the bears began to recover gradually. "The first step in the recovery process is returning to the forest, walking on the ground, and foraging for food," McLoughlin explained.
During the journey, conflicts in Ukraine and Iran caused significant delays. Over a hundred people from various countries were involved in completing this mission, including volunteers, lawyers, and animal transport crews. After receiving necessary medical care, the bears arrived in Ireland in August of the previous year.
Since their arrival at Wild Ireland Sanctuary, the bears have shown significant improvements in their health. "Their weights have increased, their skin coverings have improved, and medical test results indicate improved kidney function," McLoughlin noted. The sanctuary provides a natural environment featuring forests, lakes, and wide expanses for the bears to explore.
The Wild Ireland Sanctuary team plays a crucial role in preparing the bears for their new life. Shielo McLoughlin, who has worked at the sanctuary for over a year, says: "Our work involves hiding food throughout the sanctuary to encourage the bears to search for it, which supports their natural behavior and enhances their self-confidence." Visitors to the sanctuary have expressed great admiration for the bears, noting significant improvements in their health and psychological well-being.
