The News

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky faced harsh criticism from US President Donald Trump in recent days, raising questions about the future of relations between the two countries. According to BBC News, Trump told Newsmax last week that "Zelensky is not a good person to deal with." In another interview, Trump accused Zelensky of not knowing what he is saying.

Zelensky, for his part, expressed his frustration with the United States, stating in a Telegram post, "We welcomed every effort by our partners to end the war with dignity." Although Zelensky was not explicit in his criticism of the US president, his concerns about American support for his country have increased significantly.

In June, Trump harshly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu but later fully supported him. Some analysts believe Trump might change his stance again, but the current situation points to a deterioration in relations between the two countries.

American military support for Ukraine has become questionable, especially after the decision to restrict Patriot missile supplies. According to The Washington Post, these supplies have become extremely limited, making it difficult for Kyiv to defend itself against Russian missiles.

Trump's recent deal with Russia to open US markets to Russian diesel fuel has increased tensions between the two countries. White House spokesperson Maria Demetriefa stated that this deal would not affect fuel prices in the US, but it sends a strong message to Kyiv that Washington may be ready to negotiate with Moscow.

At the same time, reports suggest that the US may have intervened in access to Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet services, reducing the effectiveness of the Starlink system in Ukraine. This allegation has increased suspicions about American support for the country.

According to Ian Bond from the European Reform Centre, it appears that relations between Zelensky and Trump have deteriorated significantly, raising concerns about the future of American support for Ukraine.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, the current tension between Trump and Zelensky reflects a long history of strained relations between the United States and Ukraine. In February 2025, relations were strained after a disagreement between Trump and Zelensky at the White House, leading to the suspension of US military aid to Ukraine. Relations improved for a short period thereafter. However, in recent months, tensions have returned due to Trump's decisions such as allowing Russian diesel to enter the US market, which angered Ukraine. Additionally, there are suspicions that the US has restricted the flow of intelligence information to Ukraine, increasing doubts about Washington's intentions towards Kyiv.
