The News

President Donald Trump announced that the United States is engaging in discussions with Russia and China regarding the reduction of nuclear arsenals. During an interview with American news network Newsmax, Trump stated that Washington is discussing with Moscow and Beijing ways to achieve "nuclear arsenal reduction." He added that China, which owns around 620 nuclear warheads, significantly fewer than the United States and Russia, which each possess more than 4,000 warheads, is expected to catch up within five years. Despite Beijing seemingly unprepared to relinquish its nuclear arsenal, the talks continue, according to Trump.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Russia holds the world's largest nuclear arsenal, followed by the United States, with the two countries collectively possessing around 86% of the world's nuclear weapons. Reports indicate that Trump discussed this matter with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but no additional details about the talks with Russia and China were disclosed. Trump's statements came after the expiration of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, an agreement between the United States and Russia to limit nuclear weapons.

In the month following the treaty's expiration, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the early nuclear threat initiative, where Russian threats during the Ukraine war have raised European concerns. Gary Evans, former Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs, told Al Jazeera that the world has become "alarmingly reckless" regarding the risks of nuclear war with the breakdown of nuclear weapons control agreements.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, Trump's announcement of disarmament talks signals an increasing global concern over nuclear arsenals. With the expiration of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, the need for new agreements to control nuclear weapons has become more urgent. Additionally, President Macron's statements highlight the increased European anxiety over Russian nuclear threats during the Ukraine war. Notably, China, which possesses fewer nuclear warheads compared to the United States and Russia, may face growing pressure to join global efforts to reduce nuclear arsenals.
