The News

According to France 24, a large-scale demonstration has been taking place in the state of Jharkhand, India, since late July, involving thousands of unemployed students and young people demanding reforms to the state’s examination system. France 24 also reported that these disturbances followed previous protests in Delhi which led to the resignation of the Indian Education Minister last week.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, these protests can be understood as part of a wider movement of frustration among Indian youth, who are suffering from high unemployment rates and difficulties obtaining jobs through the (examination systems also known as “competitive examinations”). These examinations are often prone to leakage and corruption, reducing the opportunities for qualified young people. In the broader context, these protests remind us of growing concerns regarding the education system in India and its impact on the future of youth.

In recent years, India has seen an increase in the number of university graduates, but nevertheless it remains difficult for these graduates to find suitable employment due to intense competition in the job market and the inefficiency of the competitive examination systems. This points to wider structural challenges within the Indian economy, including the need for greater investment in education and vocational training.
